I used plex/emby for a long time to stream content to my roku TV, but I have been having some issues lately with the server. I am amazed by how ugly it is given that roku's UI is pretty good, generally. When I go to Set up device > Works with Google > Roku, I get the message "Roku is Linked" - then the app refreshes and says "Account successfully linked"... however, the TV doesn't ever show up in the app and I can no longer get Google to control the TV. If I search '4K' on Roku Youtube App, I'm able to find and watch many 4K videos. When I first set up the TV a few days ago, I added it to my Google Home/Google Assistant no problem, and was able to control the TV using Google Home. Simple and works well for my needs without having to deal with a "server" so to speak and without having to use my laptop to send the images. Everything's faster, much better interface (to my tastes :-), and after 5 minutes of inactivity the Shield goes to sleep and turns off the TV as well. I would recommend Plex and Emby for their polish if you have a server that can run the server part of them.. It's watched. You could try AndroidTV. Is it really the only option for an app to play files from USB? And, I do admit that I miss the organization/box art/meta data/etc from plex. I'm able watch some video in 4K on PC but somehow only 720p/1080p is available on Roku Youtube App. This is enforced since Dec 2017 on any 8.0.0 software device, or higher. I also use Roku Media Player, but use it a bit different. (if I undertand what "underground" might mean to you). I recently got strip lights for my room and I’ve noticed that there are a few buttons on the Roku TV remote that change the color of the lights. Anybody know more about this than me? I'm so confused, because 2 days ago when I first set up the TV it worked without a hitch. To fix it, I made a new Roku account in Canada, factory reset the TV, and now I can get Crave / other Canadian stuff (this is the fix I found online and it worked). So, for things like family photo albums, the photos are organized into folders on the USB which is plugged into the modem, and then Roku Media Player finds them and displays them in folder order. It's a 32GB i4790k so it's got plenty of power to multitask and runs the Plex server very nicely.. never even notice it.
